I wanted to share one of my absolute must-have recipes for Thanksgiving! While I might swap out the turkey now and then, I can’t imagine the holiday without a cozy bowl of butternut squash soup. A few years ago, I found a twist on this classic from an Instagram post, and I’ve been hooked ever since—it’s simply amazing!

Butternut Squash Soup

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 small butternut squashes (peeled, seeded & cubed)
  • 1 pint sugar bomb tomatoes
  • 6-8 campari tomatoes
  • 3 shallots (chopped)
  • 1 large garlic head (or 2 small ones, tops cut off)
  • 1 large onion (chopped)
  • 6 basil leaves
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp chipotle powder
  • 1 tsp oregano
  • 6 oz triple crème brie (rind removed), plus more for topping
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken stock
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Parmigiano to taste
  • Brioche slices
  • Chives to taste
  • Salt & pepper to taste
  • Olive oil
  • Crushed red pepper to taste

 

Method

    1. 1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a braising pan, add the tomatoes, shallots, garlic, onion, and squash. Drizzle generously with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Bake for 45-50 minutes, flipping the garlic halfway through.
    2. 2. Blend the roasted veggies with basil, oregano, spices, and brie until smooth.
    3. 3. Return the soup to the pan. Add cream, broth, and nutmeg, and simmer for 3-4 minutes. Adjust thickness with more cream or broth if needed. Turn off the heat and stir in the butter.
    4. 4. For cheesy brioche: Preheat a skillet over high for 2 minutes. Add a generous amount of Parmigiano, then place the brioche on top, pressing so the cheese sticks. Lower heat to medium, cook until browned (about 3-4 minutes), flip, and toast the other side.
    5. 5. Serve with brie, olive oil, crushed red pepper, chives, and black pepper on top.

Richard Bell: Embassy at Asia Society

Conversations on Indigenous sovereignty, land rights, and arts education

Asia Society is proud to present the artist Richard Bell’s major work, Embassy (2013­–ongoing). Bell is a member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities. He works in the intersection of activism and art and is committed through his practice the politics of Aboriginal emancipation and self-determination. His mediums include painting, installation, performance, and video, through which he explores the complex artistic and political problems of Western, colonial and Indigenous art production.

 

Embassy is a space for activism and dialogue in support of Aboriginal and indigenous land rights. It is activated through a series of public events. Created in 2013, it is inspired by the original Aboriginal Tent Embassy, which was pitched on the grounds of Canberra’s Parliament House in 1972 by four young activists. It has previously been presented at various locations around the world, including Tate Modern, London (2023); documenta fifteen, Kassel (2022); 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016); and Performa 15, New York (2015).

 

The Asia Society edition of Embassy features an afternoon of conversations joined by artists, scholars, and educators focusing on issues including Indigenous sovereignty, land rights, and arts education in Australia and North America.

This free event features storybooks, picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels—fiction and nonfiction—for preschoolers to middle schoolers. THE BRONX MUSEUM

RENOVATION IS UNDERWAY

now until 2026!

 

A transformative $33 million renovation of The Bronx Museum is currently underway!

 

Designed by award-winning architectural practice, Marvel, this renovation will create a world-class arts facility the people of The Bronx deserve and that the Museum needs to further elevate and expand access to its vital free arts programming.

 

The renovation will seamlessly unite the Museum’s buildings into one recognizable campus; create a continuous and fully accessible gallery loop; reorient the main entrance to the highly visible corner of 165th St and Grand Concourse; and add a new triple-height lobby space with an adjoining cafe.

 

During construction, the Museum’s North Wing remains open at regular hours—Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM to 6PM—with free admission for everyone to all exhibitions, events, and activities. The south galleries are closed until the renovation is complete.

On the stage is a two-story house. From one angle, it’s mucked out after a flood. From another, it’s a new development wrapped in Tyvek. And from another, it’s “Tara” from Gone with the Wind being transformed into an Airbnb. Sometimes it looks like it’s on fire. Someone is quilting in the corner. Come in.

 

Helmed by a writing collective of 21 artists ranging in age from 28 through 98, Reconstructing (Still Working but the Devil Might Be Inside) is a new work from Brooklyn-based theater collective the TEAM. Honor the legacy of reclusive and revered hip-hop artist MF Doom during the release of his definitive biography, The Chronicles of DOOM: Unraveling Rap’s Masked Iconoclast. Journalist S.H. Fernando Jr. (also known as SKIZ) follows the life of Daniel Dumile Jr. from his upbringing in Long Beach, New York, to his and his brother’s hip-hop group KMD, to his first masked show. Centering the music, SKIZ provides a history of East Coast rap alongside DOOM’s compelling life story and various personas, projects, and lyrics.

 

The program begins with a set by DJ Rob Swift. Afterward, poet, essayist, and cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib moderates a conversation between SKIZ, illustrator LAmour Supreme, and MF Doom’s former assistant Courtney Franco about the artist’s indelible impact on musical culture. A book signing follows.

Chuck Leavell is widely regarded as one of the greatest piano players in rock and roll history. In addition to his work on stage, he has a long-standing interest in land and tree conservation and is a respected advocate for environmental preservation.

THE BRONX MUSEUM

RENOVATION IS UNDERWAY

A transformative $33 million renovation of The Bronx Museum is currently underway!

 

Designed by award-winning architectural practice, Marvel, this renovation will create a world-class arts facility the people of The Bronx deserve and that the Museum needs to further elevate and expand access to its vital free arts programming.

 

The renovation will seamlessly unite the Museum’s buildings into one recognizable campus; create a continuous and fully accessible gallery loop; reorient the main entrance to the highly visible corner of 165th St and Grand Concourse; and add a new triple-height lobby space with an adjoining cafe.

 

During construction, the Museum’s North Wing remains open at regular hours—Wednesday through Sunday from 11AM to 6PM—with free admission for everyone to all exhibitions, events, and activities. The south galleries are closed until the renovation is complete.

Taste memory serves as a gateway to our past, present, and future, holding the keys to ancestral knowledge, personal identity, and the collective experience of Black culinary traditions. Through guided meditations and interactive tastings, we will explore how these memories can unlock new ways of imagining food sovereignty and liberation.

 

Participants will take part in a unique sensory experience that challenges and transforms their perceptions of taste, opening up possibilities for seeing the world and its potential differently. And by the end of this experience, participants will leave with a renewed understanding of the power of food and taste as tools for crafting more just and imaginative futures.

This urban green space is filled with grassy baseball and soccer fields, a cricket pitch, basketball courts, a running track, walking/biking paths, picnic fields, and more! With its extensive views of the water, Soundview Park celebrates the beauty of both the Bronx and East Rivers. how fragile, we bloom, is an immersive soundwalk, created for Wave Hill in by musicians-composers Dorothy Chan and Lucy Yao of Chromic Duo using Augmented Reality (AR). This self-guided walk through our woodlands is available through Dec 1 using a smartphone and headphones. The artists worked in collaboration with Wave Hill’s Art, Community, Education and Science (ACES) youth interns to create this unique, site-specific experience.

 

Alongside Chromic Duo’s sound design, narration and composition, stories from the ACES have been incorporated into a meditative soundwalk that invites audiences to reflect upon this current moment in history. The ACES’ stories speak to individual and collective experiences, creating a storytelling capsule. Through communal creation and connection, Chromic Duo provides a platform for Wave Hill visitors to contemplate the ways that seasons bring change, their own relationships to nature and the larger community, and ultimately, how to support one another through times of uncertainty.

As SailGP‘s catering provider for the Mubadala New York Sail Grand Prix, Great Performances was an integral part of the experience, providing their signature genuine hospitality to the most exciting racing on water. Speareheaded by Gary Bedigan, Senior Event Director, and Kevin Jaeger, Event Producer, Great Performances catered each bespoke hospitality experience on Governors Island for SailGP’s VIP and VVIP guests, which included team owners, partners, and high-profile individuals. Great Performances also provided crew catering for SailGP’s athletes and crew at Liberty Landing Marina in New Jersey, serving the team 2-3 hot meals almost every day for two weeks as SailGP’s tent team constructed the tech site, creating the “pit row” equivalent for the league. In addition to crew catering, Great Performances provided the on-water meals for SailGP’s athletes during Race Days, lunch for media members, and service for a few one-off events in New Jersey.

Summertime is one of the rare times of the year when we have a chance to enjoy a little bit of R&R. Some members of our Great Performances family took time to see loved ones, explore various parts of the world, and, of course, enjoy some delish meals! As we gear up for a busy Fall and Winter season full of events, we’re taking a moment to share some of our Summer adventures.

While in Europe every meal I had was exquisite, but the highlight for me was this Sea Bream Ceviche with mango purée and fresh tomatoes and grapefruit. If I could recreate this in my apartment, I’d eat it every day!

 

Other honorable food mentions from our trip in France/Italy are falafel from the Jewish quarter of Paris, a fully plant based quinoa appetizer with the freshest veggies I have ever tasted, many, many bowls of carbonara, and of course, prosciutto and melon.

This summer, I traveled to Pittsburgh for the weekend, to visit some of my friends. While there, I had the chance to try their popular local pizza shop, Beto’s Pizza. A Pittsburgh Staple. Just like Primanti Brothers, this pizza shop has their twist on a typical dish.

 

The base dough and tomato sauce gets cooked in an oven, and they finish it by adding cold shaved provolone cheese. Their toppings are served cold, including their cheese. Instead of ordering by the slice, you would order by the “cut”, which is typically a 4”x4”. If you order a tray, you would have 28 cuts.

 

The pizza is unusual but it’s a new take on what you call pizza. You can taste how rich and savory their tomato sauce is. With the cold ingredients, it oddly works fantastic. I would rate this place 10 out of 10 stars. If I’m ever in Pittsburgh again, I would definitely come back to Beto’s.

My parents wanted to visit me in New York from Taiwan. To make their long 18 hour flight easier, we decided to meet up in Hawaii and make it a vacation instead.

 

Everything about this trip felt like a dream. We spent most of our time on the Big Island exploring the incredible nature and away from “resort”. The landscape and the vegetation were like nothing I have ever seen. From sunset and star gazing at Mauna Kea, lush greenery of Hilo, local farms and Volcano National Park, to snorkeling all around the island with Sea Turtles, Dolphins and Manta Rays at night. We felt the love and the deep connection from locals to protect their precious surroundings, and beauty of living a sustainable life.

 

Needless to mention, the food was just as amazing. We went to the roots and had the freshest Poke in the world. If raw fish is not your thing, every restaurant offers grilled local fish such as Ono, Opah, Ahi Tuna, Aku, Mahi Mahi… A huge variety of fresh ripe fruit was also part of our everyday diet, such as lilikoi (passionfruit), guava, papaya, mango, dragon fruit, longan, coconut, pineapple… made my Taiwanese tummy felt like home 🙂

 

Returning to the city, it’s easy to forget how effortless it is to connect back to the nature. The land we give love to will give us back more than we can imagine.

This summer I became an aunt for the first time! My niece Abigail was born on 7/10/2024 and I will not stop talking about her or showing pictures of her to everyone around the office. She is the cutest little peanut in the world and over the last month and a half I have loved watching her take in the world. When I went home for her birth, the next night I bought my mom and grandfather dinner to celebrate welcoming her first grandchild and his first great-grandchild! In New England (we are from Plymouth, MA), we love a nice seafood dinner for special occasions, so I told them to get anything they wanted from our favorite restaurant down the waterfront. That was such a nice meal to eat good food and celebrate the addition to our lives. I don’t have pictures of that particular dinner but have no shortage of pictures of my Abby girl!

In late July, Chef Michael, Chef Chad, and I went up to Katchkie Farm to camp overnight before an event. We had fun picking vegetables and herb for both out dinner and the next days event.

 

Farmer Jon and his family came over and we toasted corn and had a wonderful dinner. We made flatbread pizzas with farm veg and enjoyed the campfire.

 

The following morning, we fire roasted pink potatoes in the pizza oven as well as many other vegetables for the guests. It was a great way to spend time on the farm.

If you’re going to travel to eat, you should go to Spain. And if you’re going to go to Spain, you should eat pan con tomate as often as you can.

 

Across four days in Barcelona, I ate at least four iterations of the signature dish, plus an indulgent amount of jamón serrano, heaps of patatas bravas, two different cocktails from the number one bar in the world, an otherworldly piece of fried chicken, a vegetable-packed beef sandwich that sparked a nostalgia for the time when I lived just a few kilometers away (with just a few euros to my name), and a dish of sea bass, strawberries, and slivered almonds that will stay in my memory for years to come.

 

But the crown jewel of my vacation was the reason I decided to return to Spain in the first place: a day trip to Girona to dine at the renowned El Celler de Can Roca. In 2018, Great Performances had the honor of producing “Once Upon a Kitchen,” a star-studded event featuring El Celler’s Joan Roca alongside chefs Massimo Bottura (of Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy) and Mauro Colagreco (of Mirazur in Menton, France). The event was led by GP Managing Director Ronnie Davis, who graciously called on his El Celler contact in hopes of getting me a seat at one of their coveted tables. The meal was no less than spectacular; spanning 19 courses and five hours, it was full of bold flavors and inventive presentations, my favorites being an olive tree bonsai with olive ice cream, a yin and yang-looking dish of leek and cod in pil pil sauce, and a piece of cocoa-covered foie gras nougat. Oh, the places you’ll go as a Great Performer!

Sharing a lovely dinner that I had this summer in Bodrum, Turkey at AZUR, a Michelin star restaurant right by the Mediterranean. The warm octopus with fresh potatoes and green olives, grilled octopus with chipotle pepper sauce and the hummus with calamari were my favorites.
