At Great Performances, we’ve been thrilled to partner with Wollman Rink since it’s reopening three years ago. We’ve captured the spirit of New York City with our menus featured at the Cafe and through our partnership with Melba’s Cafe which operates a kiosk on the overlook.
With tempting treats from hot chocolate and a Chili Bar, we’re delighted to offer delicious and warming dishes that can accommodate a variety of dietary preferences.

Featured in iconic films such as Serendipity and Home Alone 2, Central Park’s Wollman Rink has become an everlasting symbol of New York City. The ice skating rink kicked off another ice season in October and welcomed tourists from across the globe to experience a picturesque holiday season in NYC.
As the venue’s food and beverage partner, Great Performances introduced skaters to a variety of new options this season to enjoy at Wollman Rink’s rinkside cafe. The latest cozy treats included a Build Your Own Chili Bar featuring vegan options and a Pasta Station with bolognese, alfredo, and a rotating chef’s special. Also new this season is the Sundae Station with a variety of ice cream flavors and toppings to create some frozen magic alongside a signature Hot Chocolate Bar for a cozy treat.
In addition to introducing new options, Great Performances brought back some fan favorites including the Wollman Smash Burger (secret sauce, cheddar cheese, pickles, potato bun), which is also available as a Vegan Smash Burger, and the classic New York Style Hot Dog with the classic toppings available all beef or vegan. To enhance some of these favorite dishes, Great Performances sourced ingredients straight from their organic farm, Katchkie Farm, to bring Thunder Pickles and Katchkie Hot Sauce to Central Park.
For upscale corporate and private events, Great Performances has introduced enhanced catering packages to be enjoyed for both full venue buyouts or intimate private events in the rinkside tents. The new catering packages include a carving station with options like a delectable filet mignon, brie fondue, artisanal cheese boards, and a raw bar with fresh seafood and sauces.
Wollman Rink is celebrating its third season of operation by Wollman Park Partners (WPP) – a joint venture between HBSE, Related Companies and Equinox. With the evolving and creative menus from Great Performances, Wollman Rink continues to serve both New Yorkers and tourists alike as a dynamic culinary destination.

The significance of the Meiji Restoration, an important political period in Japanese history credited for ushering in an era of major political and social change continues to be debated extensively, more than a century and half on. As the third-largest economy in the world, Japan today is assuming an increasingly assertive role on the global stage and continues to undergo rapid changes, as it did during the Meiji era. This program will focus on the transformations in politics, society, and culture Japan experienced during the Meiji era and their relevance to the contemporary era; examine the parallels and continuity between the two periods of transformation; and explore their implications for the region as well as the wider world.
This program is associated with Asia Society’s current Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan exhibition, which reevaluates a seminal era of turmoil, creativity, and transformation in Japan spanning the mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth centuries.

In this conversation, renowned art historians Joan Kee and Steven Nelson will discuss Black artists who have incorporated Asian techniques, motifs, philosophies, and forms into their innovative works, resulting in a rich artistic dialogue that expands the boundaries of modern and contemporary art. Drawing from Kee’s recent book, The Geometries of Afro Asia: Art beyond Solidarity (2023), this discussion will center around the ink paintings of Norman Lewis, the impact of travel in China on the sculptures of Barbara Chase-Riboud, and the role of Japanese landscape architecture in the work of Martin Puryear.

Starting in 1910, many immigrants who journeyed to America were processed at an immigration station on Angel Island, located in the middle of San Francisco Bay. Until a fire led to its closure in 1940, the station primarily functioned as a detention center, where half a million people from 80 countries were held under barbaric conditions—some for weeks, others for years. The majority of these detainees were Chinese migrants, who were banned from entering the United States under the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, with few exceptions.
Making his BAM debut, acclaimed Chinese-American composer Huang Ruo (M. Butterfly, An American Soldier, Book of Mountains & Seas) revisits this chapter of American history in Angel Island, a poignant multimedia experience scored for voices and string quartet that blurs the boundaries of opera, theater, dance, and music. In collaboration with the Del Sol Quartet, the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, and archival filmmaker Bill Morrison, Huang Ruo and director Matthew Ozawa weave a powerful requiem from the century-old poetry engraved on the detention center’s walls by some of the hundreds of thousands of Chinese immigrants who were incarcerated and subjected to dehumanizing horrors. Angel Island arrives amid an ongoing epidemic of brutal violence and rampant discrimination against immigrants, asylum-seekers, and Asians across the diaspora. This production is a stirring plea for care and empathy as well as a visceral, clear-eyed tribute to the rebellion and resilience of those who passed through and perished at Angel Island.

The Winter Workspace is a program that takes place over two, six-week sessions and provides artists with free studio space, a financial stipend and access to Wave Hill’s living collection. Session One takes place from January 2 to February 18, 2024. Since its start 14 years ago, the Workspace has supported more than 150 artists. During the Winter Workspace, artists have intimate access to the greenhouses, as well as horticultural and curatorial staff. Experimentation is encouraged and artists expand their practices while working on site. Artists also engage with Wave Hill visitors through Drop-In Sundays and Open Studio events, as well as adult or family workshops. At the core of the Winter Workspace is the recognition that creating art within the context of a garden is a unique experience.
The Winter Workspace Drop-In Sunday series provides an opportunity for Wave Hill visitors to deepen their connection with the arts and their experience of the garden by learning how artists are drawing inspiration from our site. During this event, visitors can mingle with three Workspace Artists in their studios, ask questions and learn about their creative practice. Each Sunday a different group of artists participates.

SCREENING, DISCUSSION, AND EXHIBITION WALKTHROUGH
Saturday, January 6th, 2024 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Join us to celebrate the closing weekend of Michael Richards: Are You Down? with a special documentary film screening, discussion, and exhibition walkthrough. This culminating event will highlight Richards’ powerful sculpture and drawing practice, his friendships, the circumstances of his passing on September 11, 2001, and his enduring influence on cultural communities in New York City, Miami, and beyond.
A screening of the 30-minute documentary on Michael Richards titled Are You Down?, directed by Juan Matos and Dennis Scholl, will be followed by a discussion moderated by Scholl, with artists william cordova and Dread Scott and Michèle Wong, Associate Director & Head of Collections and Exhibitions at the Grey Art Gallery, all of whom were friends with Richards. After the screening and discussion, exhibition curators Alex Fialho and Melissa Levin will lead a walkthrough of the retrospective with cordova. This will be a unique opportunity to learn about Michael Richards from the perspective of those who knew him, offering an intimate look into Richards’ art, life, and legacy.

Bronx Calling: The Sixth AIM Biennial features 53 emerging artists who have participated in The Bronx Museum’s flagship artist professional development program from years 2020 through 2023. Since 1980, The Bronx Museum has supported New York’s artist community through its Artist in the Marketplace (AIM) Fellowship, which has provided pivotal career support to a diverse roster of over 1,200 of New York’s most promising artists. Themes addressed in this two-part exhibition include contemporary and critical issues, such as capitalism and colonialism, as well as speculative futures.
The Sixth AIM Biennial is curated by Eileen Jeng Lynch, Director of Curatorial Programs.

St. Mary’s Park offers a wonderful respite from the hustle and bustle of urban life. Located in the Mott Haven neighborhood in the South Bronx, the park features rolling hills, expanses of green grass, and grand old trees. The site was once part of the estate of Jonas Bronck (1600-43), for whom the Bronx is named. It is one of the largest parks in the area with a pool, playground, basketball courts, an indoor recreation center, picnic seating areas, and more. In the winter, the hills are perfect for sledding. St. Mary’s Park received $30 million from NYC’s Anchor Parks initiative, which will renovate the park’s ballfields, pathways, and amphitheater.

In 1973, David A. Walker, then a New York City Police Community Affairs Detective, developed the street game of Double Dutch into the World Class Sport that it is today. Since that initial tournament, competitive Double Dutch has expanded with citywide and national championships.
The NDDL 32nd Annual, David A. Walker Memorial, Double Dutch Holiday Classic makes possible speed and music fusion events for the best Double Dutch teams in the world. Each year, since 1991, the Double Dutch Holiday Classic has sold out to parent-supported, standing room only audiences.

Join us for a conversation with journalist Amy Yee, author of Far From the Rooftop of the World, as she shares her experience documenting the stories of Tibetans in exile. Her storytelling journey began with a hug and request from the Dalai Lama in March 2008 when she was a Financial Times reporter in India. At the time, China was cracking down on Tibetan protesters after demonstrations in Tibet turned violent. That encounter with the Dalai Lama was the start of 14 years of work across four continents spotlighting those exiled from their homeland.
While there are many books written about the Dalai Lama and Tibet, few focus on how ordinary Tibetans abroad are living and handling the extraordinary challenges of sustaining their identity and preserving culture even in exile and amid forced migration.
Amy Yee will be joined in conversation with Tsewang Rigzin, former deputy director of The Tibet Fund in Dharamsala, India and author of Exile Tibetan Community: Problems and Prospects.

Join us for a screening and discussion of No Rule is Our Rule, a documentary film about the friendship between two fiercely independent, interdisciplinary female dance artists Eiko Otake and Wen Hui. Eiko grew up in postwar Japan and has lived in New York since the 1970s. 8 years younger, Beijing-based Wen Hui grew up during the Cultural Revolution in China and shows her work internationally. They spent a month together in China in January 2020, when the surge of COVID-19 became first known to the general public. Postponing their physical collaboration, Eiko and Wen Hui continued to converse candidly over Zoom and co-edited the footage they filmed in China. The process has deepened their mutual understanding of their past works created and presented in different historical and social contexts.
This event is co-sponsored by the Asian Film & Media Initiative at the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies, NYU. It marks Wen Hui’s first return to New York since 2018, when she presented her work Red at Asia Society. The 76-minute film screening will be followed by a discussion with the artists themselves. Yiru Chen, who joined Eiko and Wen Hui in editing, will also participate in the conversation, which is moderated by Zhen Zhang, Professor in the Department of Cinema Studies at NYU Tisch and founding Director of the Asian Film and Media Initiative.

In collaboration with her longtime partner, the director Peter Born, Okpokwasili has bucked convention by embracing the impromptu, running fearlessly towards the unknown and establishing herself as “an expectation-confounding blend of authority and vulnerability” (The New York Times).
adaku, part 1: the road opens finds Okpokwasili and Born stepping into a new stage of their shared practice, crafting a thrumming, richly textured sonic and visual landscape. In this inaugural chapter of a larger speculative mythology, a precolonial African village stands at the cusp of a major upheaval as its community wrestles with a conflict that could alter the futures of all of its members. Okpokwasili and the ensemble enact a collective reckoning that explores the role of ritual and the fraught relationship between ancestors and future generations, facilitating an intimate exchange between the performers and the audience.

Using her medium-traversing works as touchstones, Wallworth sheds light on the seduction of cultish extremism by recounting her own descent into an exclusionary, mind-warping belief system and her eventual escape through art. Giving voice to experiences she never intended to share, Wallworth confronts and responds with bold, bracing candor to the troubling rise of implausible conspiracy theories and the toxic alliance that sometimes emerges between the extreme edges of organized religion and fascist forces. Environmental Crisis Posters, 1920-2020, this hands-on workshop will introduce participants to the technique of fusing or layering plastics using an iron. Participants will explore the material affordances of various types of biodegradable, recyclable, and single-use plastics in order to create fused plastic collages inspired by posters on environmental activism. Performer and theater artist Geoff Sobelle (HOME, The Object Lesson) hosts an intimate dinner party of smell, taste, and touch. NYBG is located on land that is part of Lenapehoking, the traditional homeland of the Lenni Lenape people, which extends from northern Delaware north to the Hudson Valley, and from eastern Pennsylvania to western Connecticut. The Lenape lived in this territory for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans, and still maintain their communities and cultural practices in this area today.

ASHTON HEYL
Egg Party, a short film I co-wrote and acted in, will have its World Premiere at Cinequest Film Festival. The Festival runs March 20th-30th, and tickets are 99 cents to view any time during that period. Tickets are at https://creatics.org/cinejoy, and our website with a trailer to the film is www.eggpartyfilm.com. We were also awarded the Panavision New Filmmaker Award to make the film. The Story: In late spring, six powerhouse women gather together in a Brooklyn apartment for a not-so-sober egg decorating party to support one of their own struggling with fertility. As the afternoon unfolds, the strength of their laughter and friendship creates new birth.

Will be performing in a choral concert with Ember Choral Arts on March 26-27th with musical messages of bridging divides, and later this summer will be joining the U.S. Army as a vocalist in their Regional Band career field!

I was a 2021 #CityArtistCorps Grant recipient for my original musical. Since I want to also create opportunities for fellow GP Actors to perform I cast Philip Eng in one of the roles and the 1 night event presentation was SOLD OUT. SOCIAL DISTANCE Musical follows a week amidst the Coronavirus where four multiethnic New York artist friends unite via technology while in quarantine at the start of the pandemic: a black musician, a Chinese gamer, a South East Asian medical student and a BIPOC Social Media Influencer. In the spirit of Lieber and Stoller, Ain’t Misbehavin, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Songs for a New World, SOCIAL DISTANCE is a sung through musical .
