New Kam Hing

New Kam Hing Coffee Shop is a landmark of Chinatown. It opened its doors about 35 years ago and is famous for its light, fluffy, and moist sponge cakes.

Owned by the Yee family, Kam Hing is the mother shop to Tonii’s Fresh Rice Noodle, which opened it’s doors in 2019 and worked hard to stay afloat during the pandemic. The Yee family takes a lot of pride in both shops and their part of the rich history of Chinatown.

Tonii’s owner Elizabeth Yee says of her family businesses: “My family is what inspired me to open Tonii’s. Growing up, my siblings and I always had New Kam Hing as our home base. I would hang out there with my friends after school, and I would work there on the weekends with my brother. We would have family BBQs and holiday parties there as well. Having the store play such a central role in my life when I was growing up made me realize that if I opened a shop of my own, my kids would have a chance to make the same childhood memories. Thus, I opened Tonii’s for my kids’ future— so that I could give my kids a home base, and let them know that no matter what happens, their family is right there.”

Next time you’re in Chinatown we strongly advise that you stop by Tonii’s Fresh Rice Noodle for some fresh noodles and then swing over to New Kam Hing for Chinatown’s Best Sponge Cakes.

Pinklady Cheese Tart

Established during the summer of 2020, amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 global pandemic, a cozy shop in New York Chinatown, called Pinklady, is the latest home for the irresistible ooze of sweet molten cheese in Japanese Cheese Tarts, which has been spreading around the globe. Founder Jean Lim grew up in Malaysia, where shops selling individual Japanese cheese tarts had been very popular with her friends and family for years. It was only in 2019, on a trip home from New York City, that she tasted one for the first time. “It was okay,” she said, “but it could have been cheesier.” The attraction of these cheese tarts is that eaten fresh out of the oven, their creamy middles offer an alluring molten melt of cheese, making them an instant Instagram darling.

Lim had moved to New York for a Master degree several years previously but realized that wasn’t the path for her. She had always imagined running a business. Armed with 5QT Kitchenaid mixer and an oven at home, Lim started testing her recipes for 6 months. Neighbors, friends and family all agreed that the cheese tarts were delicious before Lim she took a giant leap in 2020 and opened the petite Pinklady. “Life is short,” says Lim, “you have to go for your dream.”

Lim’s version of Japanese cheese tarts is she says, “less sweet, fluffier, easy to eat, and not heavy.” All 200-300 a day are made in the tiny kitchen at the back of Pinklady. Lim started with the original cheese flavor, which is still the most popular, adding 7 more options in a range of natural flavors and hues, (green matcha, purple ube, cocoa chocolate, silvery black sesame, original with blueberry filling, fruit flavors such as lemon and pink strawberry). The name Pinklady came to her in a dream.

Fong On

FongOn7
Current location at 81 Division Street

Established in 1933, Fong On is a family-owned tofu shop that has been in the Eng Family for four generations and counting. Originally prepared one block at a time, the Eng family ramped up production using barrels starting in the 1940s; a tradition that they still utilize today.

Many things have changed over the years including flavors, toppings, and selection, but the Eng family still proudly produces the same great tofu that New Yorkers have enjoy for many years. Today, Fong On is a ready-to-eat tofu bar offering freshly-made hot or cold Tofu Pudding with customizable toppings, as well as homemade Sticky Rice Cakes and Soy Milk.

Monsieur Vo

Co-Founders Jimmy Ly and Yen Vo

Madame Vo and Monsieur Vo are two modern Vietnamese restaurants in the heart of the East Village in New York City. The creation of husband-wife duo Chef Jimmy Ly and Yen Vo, Madame Vo opened in 2017 specializing in homestyle cooking, noodle soups, and comfort foods. Monsieur Vo opened in 2022, focusing on original takes on street food, drinking food, as well as large-format meat and fish.

It all started when would-be Chef Jimmy met Yen, who had moved to New York from Houston to pursue a career in fashion. Back in Texas, Yen was used to eating traditional southern Vietnamese food at the hundreds of Vietnamese restaurants in town. So when a friend introduced the soon-to-be couple, Yen wanted to know: “Where can I find good Vietnamese food in New York City?”

In 2022, the team unveiled Monsieur Vo — an elegant and modern Vietnamese meat and seafood restaurant in the East Village that spotlights Vietnam’s ăn nhậu culture, referring to the beloved tradition of celebrating and bonding over savory foods and plentiful drinks.

Taking over the space that previously housed Madame Vo BBQ, which closed during the COVID-19 pandemic, Monsieur Vo is a totally new and original concept that expands beyond Vietnamese barbecue with reimagined street dishes as well as more large-format meat platters like a Bun Bo Hue Beef Shank (grilled shank marinated for 24 hours in a Central Vietnamese soup base then brushed with lemongrass-shrimp butter).

KJUN

Chef Jae Jung
Credit: Melissa Hom

Chef Jae’s cuisine has been featured in the New York Times, Eater, FOOD & WINE Magazine, Bon Appétit Magazine, the New Yorker, and Bloomberg Pursuits, which named KJUN one of the Best New Restaurants in New York.  Jae Jung has also appeared as a competitor on Bravo TV’s Top Chef.

Originally from Seoul, Chef Jae left her family to come to the United States in 2009 to attend the Culinary Institute of America in New York.  Upon graduation, she moved to New Orleans and fell in love with Cajun food while working in the kitchens of the city’s most-decorated restaurants, including August, Domenica, Herbsaint and Dooky Chase. During these formative years, Jae developed her distinctive Korean-Cajun flavors and techniques, as well as her deep commitment to the spirit of Southern cuisine and hospitality.

In 2021, Chef Jae launched her first start-up, KJUN, in the middle of the pandemic, with an entire menu of innovative Korean-Cajun fusion dishes. Working from a basement catering kitchen, Chef Jae prepped, took orders, cooked, and ran deliveries before returning to wash dishes. Her unique, complex cuisine soon had New Yorkers captivated, “I didn’t think that many people would order, but they did.” KJUN received critical acclaim from the New Yorker Magazine, Bloomberg Food, the Infatuation, and Eater.

Chef Hong Thaimee

Originally from Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hong Thaimee is a chef, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who has served as a global ambassador for Thai cuisine and culture for nearly a decade. Armed with drive, a Master’s Degree in business, but little professional kitchen experience, Hong set off for New York City with the goal of sharing her love for Thai food with the world. She used her tenacity to secure cooking jobs at Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s acclaimed Spice Market and Perry Street restaurants, where she spent several years mastering classic technique. In 2012, Hong left Jean-Georges to open Ngam in the East Village which was named Best Thai Food in NYC by The Village Voice in 2013. In 2015, she published her first cookbook “True Thai” (Rizzoli). Hong has been invited to cook at prestigious venues such as New York’s Metropolitan Musuem of Art, the James Beard House, The St. Regis Maldives, and many more.

In the Fall of 2020, Hong debuted her latest venture, Thaimee Love. After a successful pop-up restaurant to trial the concept, her permanent new restaurant, Thaimee Love, opened in October 2021 on New York’s W Houston Street. Thaimee Love specializes in “Baan Baan” cuisine, replicating the comforting, home-style of Northern Thai dishes.
