New Kam Hing Coffee Shop is a landmark of Chinatown. It opened its doors about 35 years ago and is famous for its light, fluffy, and moist sponge cakes.

Owned by the Yee family, Kam Hing is the mother shop to Tonii’s Fresh Rice Noodle, which opened it’s doors in 2019 and worked hard to stay afloat during the pandemic. The Yee family takes a lot of pride in both shops and their part of the rich history of Chinatown.

Tonii’s owner Elizabeth Yee says of her family businesses: “My family is what inspired me to open Tonii’s. Growing up, my siblings and I always had New Kam Hing as our home base. I would hang out there with my friends after school, and I would work there on the weekends with my brother. We would have family BBQs and holiday parties there as well. Having the store play such a central role in my life when I was growing up made me realize that if I opened a shop of my own, my kids would have a chance to make the same childhood memories. Thus, I opened Tonii’s for my kids’ future— so that I could give my kids a home base, and let them know that no matter what happens, their family is right there.”

Next time you’re in Chinatown we strongly advise that you stop by Tonii’s Fresh Rice Noodle for some fresh noodles and then swing over to New Kam Hing for Chinatown’s Best Sponge Cakes.

Fong On

FongOn7
Current location at 81 Division Street

Established in 1933, Fong On is a family-owned tofu shop that has been in the Eng Family for four generations and counting. Originally prepared one block at a time, the Eng family ramped up production using barrels starting in the 1940s; a tradition that they still utilize today.

Many things have changed over the years including flavors, toppings, and selection, but the Eng family still proudly produces the same great tofu that New Yorkers have enjoy for many years. Today, Fong On is a ready-to-eat tofu bar offering freshly-made hot or cold Tofu Pudding with customizable toppings, as well as homemade Sticky Rice Cakes and Soy Milk.

Mission Chinese

Danny Bowien is a chef and restaurateur born in South Korea and raised in Oklahoma. He is the founder and owner of Mission in New York City and co-founder of Mission Chinese Food in San Francisco, California. Bowien is a James Beard Award winner and the main subject of season six of the food and travel show, The Mind of a Chef.

Mission Chinese gets its roots from the west coast, having begun as a street food concept in the Mission District of San Francisco by Anthony Myint. Over the next two years, Mission Street Food became Mission Chinese Food: a restaurant-within-a-restaurant and trailblazer of the pop-up genre.

Myint came to partner with Danny Bowien, an ambitious young chef who focused the project on mouth numbing flavors of Sichuan cuisine. With the prospect of opening a standalone location of Mission Chinese Food, Danny Bowien and Youngmi Mayer moved to New York City and signed the lease on a modest Thai takeout spot with an attached beer garden on Orchard Street in the Lower East Side. This new iteration of Mission Chinese Food was a runaway hit and was named New York Times Restaurant of the Year for 2012. Shortly thereafter, Bowien won a James Beard award for “Rising Star Chef”. In 2013, Mission Chinese Food on Orchard Street was closed by the Department of Buildings as a result of unpermitted construction by previous ownership. Shortly thereafter, Mission Chinese Food found a new home for its flagship location on East Broadway in Chinatown. In 2018, Bowien opened a second New York location located in the industrial neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

RedFarm

Chef Madeline Lanciani

New York, NY – RedFarm is open at 529 Hudson Street in the West Village. This new destination from dim sum master chef Joe Ng and Chinese food expert Ed Schoenfeld aims to be one of the most exciting and influential restaurants in the country. RedFarm brings a greenmarket sensibility to modern and inventive Chinese food and super-charged dim sum complemented by modern, rustic décor.

Joe Ng’s menu takes a clean, fresh approach to Chinese food. Signature items include clever dim sum creations for which Ng is known and small plates: Pac Man dumplings; yuzu wasabi shrimp; mushroom spring rolls that evoke a chanterelle mushroom; and a sculptural chicken salad. Modern takes on classic main dishes includes remarkably tender marinated rib steak with steamed baby bok choy and spicy steamed sea bass.

Restaurant designer Jun Aizaki, of Brooklyn’s Crème Design, brought RedFarm’s locavore, farm-to-table mindset to life in the 1828 townhouse parlor-level space. Painted white brick walls and exposed wooden beams add intimate warmth to the 1,200 square foot room. Aizaki outfitted the room with wooden tables, chairs, crates, red and white patterned fabrics to create a classic farmhouse feel. Menus, chopsticks and flora hang from rustic piping above the five booths and two communal tables.
