Chocobar Cortés

Mott Haven (Bronx) Location

A FAMILY COMPANY
Chocolate Cortés is a 4th generation, family-owned, Caribbean, bean-to-bar chocolate manufacturing company. Originally established in the Dominican Republic in 1929 by Don Pedro Cortés Forteza, his pioneer spirit promptly moved him to export, and subsequently begin production of Cortés products from his native Puerto Rico; thus paving the way to fulfill his vision of developing Caribbean grown cacao to its fullest potential. Known for its rich and delicious hot chocolate, Chocolate Cortés quickly became a favorite of Puerto Rican and Dominican households to this very day.

The original Chocobar Cortés location, which opened in Old San Juan in 2013, often tops review and travel websites.  In the Dominican Republic, Cortés has cocoa plantations and a popular brand, Embajador, that uses the Cortés logo. A visitor center, with a cafe led by Ricardo de Obaldía, the chef of the Chocobar in San Juan, opened in September at a Cortés factory in Santo Domingo.

The Bronx restaurant, modeled after the San Juan location, continues the company’s tradition of using chocolate in varied and often surprising ways.

Branch Patty

The Branch Family

Established in 2013, Branch Patty is a family owned business focused on the art of making Jamaican-style patties. As a Caribbean child, Samuel Branch grew up with a love of patties. He perfected his recipes and technique through his skill and perseverance as a professional chef. Branch Patty was re-launched in 2017 with his wife Lisa. Together they emphasize serving with kindness and integrity as primary ingredients. They don’t believe in serving anything they wouldn’t serve their own children! Branch patties are produced by hand in small batches. We look forward to serving you the “Branch Patty Experience.”

Our Core Values

Rawia Bishara, the Palestinian-American chef and proprietor of the Brooklyn-based restaurant Tanoreen has received widespread acclaim for her Middle Eastern culinary creations from some of the most respected food critics and publications including The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Michelin Guide, Zagat, and others. She is the author of three cookbooks: Olives, Lemon and Za’atar (Kyle Books), Levant: New Middle Eastern Flavours (Kyle Books), and Hummus, Bulgur & Za’atar (Fackelträger Verlag GmbH).

Following years of frequent dinner parties and teaching friends how to cook, chef Rawia decided to open a restaurant to share a simple idea: cooking delicious Palestinian & Middle Eastern food as she does for family and friends, but with her unique twists.

In 1998, Tanoreen opened as a ten table storefront in Brooklyn, NY. Rawia’s innovative cuisine inspired her daughter Jumana Bishara to join her mother’s business and since then they have expanded to a larger location. Tanoreen’s cookery style was born first and foremost as a form of expression inspired by Rawia’s mom and then influenced by her time traveling abroad and living in the New York.

Rawia describes herself as the daughter of a passionate, imaginative home cook. Jumana can now describe herself as the daughter of a passionate, imaginative restaurateur and author.

Pastrami Queen

In 1956, when this kosher Jewish delicatessen first opened on Queens Boulevard, it was called Pastrami King, and for nearly 40 years the place fed the courthouse crowd out there in Kew Gardens. In 1998, facing a steep decline in business, the King decamped to the Upper East Side and, in honor the new owners’ family matriarch, was renamed Pastrami Queen.

In 2020, Pastrami Queen crossed the park, opening their second location on West 72nd Street in the space that Fine and Schapiro held since 1927, before that venerable institution closed for good when the pandemic hit in March. So there’s a lot of history here, as befits one of the best purveyors of this iconic NYC cuisine, and while you wait for your counterperson to pile that pastrami high on rye, take a moment to browse the NYC Jewish Deli wall of fame behind you, filled with photos of places like Ben’s Ben’s (the deli so nice he named it twice), Jay and Lloyd’s of Sheepshead Bay (shuttered only last May, another victim of COVID), and, most intriguing, the long-gone Kishke King of Brownsville, home of the Frank Built For Two: “14 bites… 10 inches long.”

All'antico Vinaio

Tommaso Mazzanti

Tommaso Mazzanti was born in 1988 in Bagno a Tipoli (Florence). He attended the hotel school until the age of 18, and then entered the family business (All’antico Vinaio). He joined the family company in 2014 and then opened 4 other stores with them between 2017 and 2021. In 2020, his first store outside of Florence opened in Milan. In 2020, he has also opened a store in the most important shopping center in Italy, I Gigli. He had two experiences in the USA with the Bastianich family both in New York and in Los Angeles, which sold out every day. He has been defined among the best and most social young restaurateurs in Italy.

Within a few years, Tommaso Mazzanti brought his restaurant All’antico Vinaio from being a reference point for the workers of the historic center of Florence to being a reference point for tourists from all over the world. The Schiacciata la Favolosa, prepared by him with Sbriciolona (typical Florentine salami), Pecorino cream made by him, Artichoke cream and fried eggplant has been defined by the main magazines as among the best sandwiches in the world.

Tommaso currently has four shops in Florence, one inside the I Gigli Shopping Center, one in the heart of Milan and another opening in the center of Rome, while also overseeing operations for his New York location and soon to come Beverly Hills location.

Mimi Cheng's

Hannah&Marian
Hannah & Marian Cheng
Credit: New York Times

After not being able to find cooking like our Mom’s, we opened Mimi Cheng’s in the summer of 2014, making Taiwanese dumplings by hand everyday.

We quickly realized though that this was no easy feat.  Mimi used to stay up late washing, chopping, shredding, mixing, and wrapping dozens of fresh dumplings made with organic and local ingredients. When we left for college, she would drive down to see us with coolers of dumplings and jars of her secret sauce, enough to feed us and all our friends for weeks. The tradition continued when we started corporate jobs in Manhattan; our refrigerators were always stockpiled with fresh dumplings. Each one was individually hand-wrapped. It was Mimi’s way of taking care of us even when she was not around.

Now you can see why it wasn’t so easy to find dumplings just the way Mom made.

We use pasture-raised pork, organic chicken, organic and/or local vegetables, extra virgin olive oil, and non-gmo sunflower oil. Mimi taught us to never take shortcuts. Three locations later, we are still sticklers on making food the right way.

Much love,

Hannah + Marian
