Baazi

Chef Gaurav Anand

Gaurav Anand arrived in the U.S. more than twelve years ago with a dream of making it in New York. Starting with Bhatti Indian Grill, he built a group of three NYC restaurants including New York Times two-star Moti Mahal Delux and Awadh, as well as restaurants in New Delhi and Goa. He also launched his high-end catering company, working on weddings around the world from Mexico and the Caribbean to Italy and France to Turkey. When the pandemic hit, his events were canceled and he spent the time developing new recipes.

The name Baazi (‘bet’ in Hindu) references Gaurav’s decision to take a chance on a different, more sophisticated concept, despite the challenges of the pandemic, while his other restaurants focus on regional cuisines.

While still rooted in Indian culinary tradition, Baazi forgoes heavy dishes, hearty flavors and powdered spices, instead coaxing natural flavors out of raw ingredients.

The Migrant Kitchen

Chefs Nas & Dan

In October 2019, two friends—Nas and Dan—teamed up to create The Migrant Kitchen: a long-dreamt-of catering business that focused on providing meaningful opportunities for immigrants to showcase the cuisines and cultures of their home countries while earning more than just minimum wage. In doing so, they had absolutely no idea (like any of us) that COVID-19 was about to turn the world upside down…

Once COVID hit NYC, Nas and Dan quickly pivoted from their standard catering operation to serving food to frontline healthcare workers fighting against the pandemic. As COVID continued to change the way we lived and ate, our operation quickly grew into something much greater. Within the next few months, TMK was serving over 60,000 meals a week to food insecure communities across NYC.

Now we’re getting back to our original mission – this time we’re sharing everything we’re cooking with the entire city.

Our locations in the Upper East Side, Brooklyn and (soon) the Upper West Side serve American food inspired by immigrants. We aim to prove that shawarma and carnitas are just as American as hamburgers and apple pie.

Bombay Sandwich Company

Bombay Sandwich Company was founded at the Smorgasburg food festival in Brooklyn in 2012. We opened our first brick and mortar shop in Manhattan in 2014 and are proud to be called “Best Sandwich,” “Best Bowl,” “Best Indian,” and of course, “Best Chai.”

We’ve been featured on The Cooking Channel, Food Network, and CBS, and have even fed global tastemakers like Bono, Julianne Moore, Fred Armisen, Anne Hathaway, and Yoko Ono. And most recently, we were honored to be visited by Deepak Chopra.

While we launched vegan, we’ve since expanded our menu to offer both vegan and vegetarian dishes. Today, we are best known for innovating new recipes, introducing chef-crafted modern Indian sandwiches.

In fact, Bombay Sandwich Co. was one of the first in NYC to introduce a tikka burger! We love creating in the kitchen, and we are honored to continue to introduce new flavor profiles to our audience.

Notably, our cafe is also home to a sister restaurant, Bombay Curry Co.

Bombay Curry Co. was created with love by our Bombay Sandwich Co. owner and operator, Nisha. Inspired by recipes from home and propelled by the need for quality takeout and delivery options during the pandemic, Nisha crafted a virtual restaurant brand that would bring high-quality curries to homes across the city.

AWADH

Chef Aarthi Sampath
Great-Performances_Peoples-Kitchen_Awadh_Gaurad-Anand
Chef and owner Gaurav Anand

Awadh is a showcase for the storied “dum pukht” or slow cooking style popular in the Lucknow region. Chef-Owner Gaurav Anand opened the restaurant in 2014 following on the success of his New York City restaurants Bhatti Indian Grill and Moti Mahal Delux.

Chef and owner of three critically acclaimed and internationally recognized NYC restaurants – Bhatti Indian Grill, Moti Mahal Delux and Awadh – Gaurav Anand is one of the youngest restaurateurs in the city. He has been praised by numerous media outlets for the authenticity and innovation he brings to Indian cuisine, and includes 2 Star reviews by The New York Times. He has created sold out dinners at the prestigious James Beard Foundation, and Awadh was rated the best Indian restaurant in NYC by the Village Voice.

Chef Aarthi Sampath’s passion for cooking took root in her parent’s kitchen where she perused cookbooks of culinary stars she never imagined would be in her orbit. Chef Sampath was determined to change this narrative, first with studies at the Institute of Hotel Management in Jaipur, and then with a coveted place in the Taj Hotel Group Management Program. After five years developing a deep appreciation of Indian Cuisine with the Taj Group in Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai, it was time to pursue a global perspective.

Chef Sampath came to the United States to attend Johnson & Wales University. She then joined Junoon in New York City as an intern and she rapidly ascended to the Chef de Cuisine role, applying modern techniques to traditional Indian cuisine that so perfectly reflected Junoon’s culinary style and Michelin star status. Chef Sampath played a leading role in Junoon’s expansion while expanding her own horizons, working with chefs at the James Beard Foundation and several exclusive culinary festivals.

Skill and a commanding presence earned Chef Sampath status on several national TV series. She was a 2016 winner on the fiercely competitive “CHOPPED”. She has also graced the screen on “BEAT BOBBY FLAY”, winning the day with her biryani. “I feel elated for the opportunity to represent Indian culture in the western market. Although Biryani is nostalgia to some, it’s still not very known, other than the complexity of making it,” explained the rising star chef.
