Richard Bell: Embassy at Asia Society
Conversations on Indigenous sovereignty, land rights, and arts education

Asia Society is proud to present the artist Richard Bell’s major work, Embassy (2013–ongoing). Bell is a member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities. He works in the intersection of activism and art and is committed through his practice the politics of Aboriginal emancipation and self-determination. His mediums include painting, installation, performance, and video, through which he explores the complex artistic and political problems of Western, colonial and Indigenous art production.
Embassy is a space for activism and dialogue in support of Aboriginal and indigenous land rights. It is activated through a series of public events. Created in 2013, it is inspired by the original Aboriginal Tent Embassy, which was pitched on the grounds of Canberra’s Parliament House in 1972 by four young activists. It has previously been presented at various locations around the world, including Tate Modern, London (2023); documenta fifteen, Kassel (2022); 20th Biennale of Sydney (2016); and Performa 15, New York (2015).
The Asia Society edition of Embassy features an afternoon of conversations joined by artists, scholars, and educators focusing on issues including Indigenous sovereignty, land rights, and arts education in Australia and North America.

Life resembles the abandoned and worm-eaten stage on the side of a lake in Chekhov’s 1895 play about a group of artists convening at a country estate. In an emotionally charged, stripped down interpretation, five actresses sit around an oversized table and offer an extremely intimate presentation of the Russian playwright’s “spectacle of waste” (The New Yorker). Directed by Guillermo Cacace, the Argentinian company—Muriel Sago, Paula Fernández Mbarak, Romina Padoan, Clarisa Korovsky, and Marcela Guerty—makes their North American debut with this striking vision of one of Chekhov’s best-known works, adapted by Juan Ignacio Fernández.

The illustrious playwright and director Tiago Rodrigues, Artistic Director of the Festival d’Avignon, returns to BAM after 2021’s joyous By Heart with a courageous, compelling work with a jaw-dropping premise. For over 70 years, one Portuguese family has convened in a country house to take the life of a fascist, passing down their custom from generation to generation. But the latest Catarina, among the clan’s youngest members, has misgivings, prompting a fiery family drama that poses urgent questions: Can the rules of democracy be violated in order to defend it? Does violence have a place in the creation of a more equitable society? Catarina and the Beauty of Killing Fascists is a penetrating, poetic, and compassionate work about sacrifices made in the name of a better world.

An atmospheric phenomenon created by refracted light, a sun dog is striking proof that, when natural conditions are right, familiar elements can shift the way we see the world. This prismatic collaboration similarly allows us glimpses of another realm, bringing together inspired composer and filmmaker pairs to create short-format films presented alongside newly-created music for live orchestra. Featuring compositions by Arooj Aftab, Devonté Hynes, and more, performed by the electrifying new-music ensemble Alarm Will Sound, this boundless exploration of image and sound imagines how stories can be told both musically and visually from equal footing.

Calling all young book lovers! Meet more than 40 of your favorite Brooklyn authors and illustrators as they share their latest publications. This free event features storybooks, picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels—fiction and nonfiction—for preschoolers to middle schoolers. Highlights include books in Hindi and Mandarin, along with works on topics as diverse as Ocean Parkway, Mars, Edward Gorey, trains, the ABCs, Prince, and poetry.
Throughout the day, children can chat with authors and illustrators, listen to readings and watch artists sketch, get books signed, meet a famous dog, and participate in book-related art projects.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Todd Phillips, violin, and Daniel Phillips, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

In conjunction with Fall Foliage weekend, pianist Sarah Cahill presents a program entitled The Woods So Wild, featuring a selection of sylvan themed music. Throughout music’s history, composers have celebrated nature and the great outdoors. As we urgently strive to preserve our precious environment, reflecting on nature through music heightens our attention to its great wonders. Beginning with William Byrd’s The Woods So Wild from 1590, Cahill takes listeners on a marathon journey through musical portraits of the natural world. Other featured pieces include Mamoru Fujieda’s Patterns of Plants, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s Forest Scenes, and Erkki Melartin’s The Mysterious Forest, among others.

Join us at Wave Hill for an exclusive after-hours encounter! Meet owls of all shapes and sizes. Birders and nature lovers will be treated to a special adventure as the sun sets over the Hudson and nocturnal creatures come to life.
“Early birds” can join a sunset nature walk with local NYC naturalists and birders Gabriel Willow and Ryan Mandelbaum. Listen and look for nocturnal creatures in the shadowy nighttime gardens. You won’t believe you’re in the Bronx!
Falconers Brian and Teddy Bradley and their spectacular live owls headline the evening with an exciting indoor program introducing these amazing birds of prey. Feel the wind brush your face as they fly silently inches above your head and get an intimate look at their adaptations and hunting techniques. Don’t forget your cameras for incredible close-ups!
The evening culminates in a lively round of Bird Trivia with trivia master Ryan Mandelbaum and emcee Gabriel Willow. Bring your own team or form a team here with new friends made during the evening. Prizes will be awarded to the winners. Order food and drinks from your table so you won’t miss the fun! This event is for adults 21 and older.
